TOP Quotation

So. My poem for this week didn't quite turn out how I expected. It went from being a poem inspired by one of my favorite quotations, to a poem against Fundamentalist Christianity. So. Yeah. It's supposed to be read in a mildly sarcastic light.

The quotation is: "We desire nothing so much as what we ought not to have." -Publilius Syrus

On to the poem. Questions, Comments and Criticisms are always welcome and encouraged.

(Desire is the Devil’s Work)

We are all Sinners and Saints
Alike, none more pure than the next
We crave mortal pleasures,
Lust, Gluttony, Greed,
The downfall of our perceived
Righteousness, the epitome
Of transgressions against The Crown.

We are invincible believers,
Our offenses are redeemed
By the Blood of the Innocent,
The slaughtered, sacrificial Lamb,
We deface His memory
With the lechery of commercialization,
Overtones of avarice, and the eager
Insatiability of childish exuberance.

We pay lip service to our beloved
Creator, ignoring His commands,
Instead eating of the forbidden fruit.
There’s ignorance in the bliss
Of siding with the snake,
Whose whispered words ring
All too true in the troubled times of today.

Our morality is skewed,
Television and movies show
Our children everything they shouldn’t,
And we wonder why when they do.
Sex and violence sell everything,
Including Bibles and documentaries,
We desire to know where it all began.
